D'Addario Admits Using Suno AI Music in Promo Video After Two Weeks of Denial

Guitar accessories company D'Addario has confirmed it used Suno, the AI music-generation platform, in a promotional video — after nearly two weeks of denials that only ended when the evidence became impossible to dismiss.\n\n## Key takeaways\n\n- D'Addario admitted that AI-generated music from Suno appeared in a recent promotional video after denying the claim for roughly two weeks.\n- The company offered multiple alternative explanations during that period, including low-quality audio exports and the use of plug-ins like Autotune.\n- The admission follows a near-identical pattern to the Fenix Flexin "Rubberz" controversy, where a flat denial eventually gave way to acknowledgment after technical evidence mounted.\n- Suno itself has recently announced plans to watermark AI-generated songs, which would make this kind of ambiguity harder to sustain in the future.\n- For brands and creators using AI audio in public-facing work, the D'Addario episode is a concrete case study in why early disclosure is less damaging than a prolonged denial.\n\n## How the denial unraveled\n\nAccording to The Verge, D'Addario's explanations shifted over the course of the controversy — first pointing to low-quality audio exports, then to combinations of processing plug-ins like Autotune as potential sources of the telltale artifacts critics were hearing. Neither explanation satisfied the people flagging the audio. Eventually the company confirmed what the evidence already suggested: Suno was involved.\n\nThe specific technical signatures that AI music detectors and listeners latched onto are the same ones that have tripped up other artists and brands. The music-generation field is still young enough that Suno and similar tools leave audible fingerprints — patterns in the percussion, vocal timbre, and harmonic texture that trained ears and classifiers can isolate. That's precisely why Suno has said it plans to introduce watermarking and download limits, a move covered here when Suno announced those plans earlier this year. Once those watermarks are baked into every export, the window for plausible deniability shrinks dramatically.\n\n## A second high-profile denial that didn't hold\n\nThis is the second notable case in a short span where a public figure or brand denied AI music involvement and then reversed course. LA rapper Fenix Flexin spent time flatly denying that his Billboard Hot 100 single "Rubberz" was AI-generated before the open-source Treblo classifier confirmed it and the denial collapsed. The D'Addario situation rhymes closely: a brand, a promotional asset, a community that noticed something off, and a multi-week gap between the first accusation and the eventual admission.\n\nFor creators working with AI-generated audio — whether scoring a short film, backing a product demo, or building a social media reel — the lesson from both cases is practical: the artifacts are detectable now, and they will become more detectable as classifiers improve and watermarking becomes standard. Burying AI involvement in a video's credits is a very different liability than actively denying it when asked.\n\n## What the D'Addario case signals for AI audio in branded content\n\nBrands have been quietly folding AI-generated music into promotional work for cost and speed reasons — Suno and competitors can produce a licensable-sounding track in seconds at a fraction of what a session musician costs. D'Addario makes products for guitarists, which makes the optics of using AI music in a guitar promo particularly sharp. The community most likely to notice AI audio artifacts is exactly the community D'Addario is trying to reach.\n\nThat audience overlap is worth keeping in mind for any creator producing content aimed at musicians or audio professionals. The tolerance for undisclosed AI audio is lower there than in most other verticals, and the detection skills are higher. Proactively labeling AI-generated music — even in a short promo clip — is increasingly the lower-risk path, not the higher one.\n\nSuno's forthcoming watermarking system will eventually make the question of whether a track is AI-generated answerable by machine rather than by ear. At that point, the D'Addario playbook — deny, offer alternative explanations, admit — becomes structurally unavailable. Disclosure up front will simply be the only option that doesn't backfire.
