Higgsfield's AI Movie 'Cully Hill Boys' Works Best Where Humans Did the Heavy Lifting

Higgsfield's AI-generated short film Cully Hill Boys is drawing attention not as a showcase of what AI video can do, but as a clear map of where it still falls short — and why the strongest moments trace back to human writers and performers.

Key takeaways

• Cully Hill Boys was produced using Higgsfield's AI video generation platform and originated from a script that appeared on the Black List, Hollywood's annual survey of the best unproduced screenplays.
• The Verge's review found the film's most effective sequences were driven by its human-authored script and real performances, not the AI-generated imagery.
• AI-generated video still struggles with consistent character faces, physics, and the kind of micro-expression that sells a comedic beat.
• For AI-art creators exploring video, the film is a practical case study in where AI generation adds value (stylized fantasy sequences, quick scene transitions) versus where it costs you (sustained character drama).
• Higgsfield is one of a handful of platforms — alongside Runway and Kling — competing to make AI video production accessible to independent creators.

Cully Hill Boys follows three hapless English lads fantasizing about fame over pints in a London pub, their daydreams escalating into increasingly elaborate visions of celebrity. The premise came from a Black List script — meaning it had real structural bones before a single AI frame was generated. That lineage matters: according to The Verge, the best parts of the finished film are the ones most anchored in that human source material.

The split is instructive for anyone using AI video tools right now. Fantasy sequences — the pub lads imagining themselves on red carpets, in music videos, surrounded by adoring crowds — are exactly the kind of material AI generation handles with relative grace. They're stylized by design, so visual inconsistencies read as surreal rather than broken. The moment the film needs to hold on a face for a comedic reaction, or sustain a two-shot conversation with consistent lighting and matching eyelines, the artifice shows.

Where Higgsfield's toolset earns its keep

Higgsfield positions itself as a cinematic AI video platform aimed at independent filmmakers, and Cully Hill Boys is its most ambitious public proof of concept to date. The platform's strength — rapid generation of varied visual environments and stylized set pieces — maps almost perfectly onto what the script demands in its fantasy segments. Quick cuts, exaggerated aesthetics, and scene variety are cheap to produce with current AI video tools; sustained dramatic realism is not.

For creators already experimenting with AI image generation before moving into video, this is a useful calibration. The same principle that makes a single AI image of a fantasy cityscape more convincing than an AI portrait of a specific person applies in motion: abstraction and spectacle hold up; specificity and continuity break down. If you're building a short with AI image generation as a storyboarding or style-reference step before generating video, leaning into that divide — planning your AI-generated sequences around visual variety rather than character close-ups — is the practical lesson Cully Hill Boys demonstrates in real time.

The Black List connection changes the calculus

The fact that the script came from the Black List isn't a footnote — it's the controlling variable. Most AI video experiments fail at the story level before they fail at the visual level. Cully Hill Boys doesn't, and that's entirely because a human writer solved the structural problem first. The AI tools then had something worth illustrating.

That's a workflow argument as much as an aesthetic one. Creators who treat AI video generation as a production tool layered on top of solid human creative decisions — rather than a replacement for them — are going to get further faster. The film is an accidental proof of that thesis, and it's more persuasive for being unintentional.

Higgsfield hasn't announced a wide release date for Cully Hill Boys, but the project is already circulating in AI filmmaking communities as a benchmark for what the current generation of tools can and can't sustain across a complete short-form narrative.
