OpenAI and Jony Ive's First AI Device Is a $300–$400 Hockey-Puck Smart Speaker

OpenAI's first hardware collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive is shaping up to be a displayless, battery-powered AI speaker about the size of a hockey puck, priced between $300 and $400 and targeting a 2027 launch.\n\n## Key takeaways\n\n- OpenAI's debut Jony Ive device is a doughnut-shaped, hockey-puck-sized AI smart speaker with no screen, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.\n- The device will be battery-powered and priced above $300, with reports placing it in the $300–$400 range.\n- It is expected to launch in 2027 and will run on ChatGPT, making it essentially a voice-first AI assistant in a premium physical form.\n- No display means all interaction is audio — a significant design constraint compared to rivals like Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest Hub.\n- The price point puts it well above mainstream smart speakers, positioning it as a premium AI hardware product.\n\n## A voice-only bet in a screen-heavy market\n\nThe Verge reports that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman described the device as "essentially a smart speaker without a display" — battery-powered, doughnut-shaped, and roughly the size of a hockey puck. That last detail matters: the form factor is compact enough to sit on a desk or nightstand, untethered from a power outlet, which would make it more portable than any current mainstream smart speaker.\n\n> "The device will have a unique look."\n>\n> — Mark Gurman, Bloomberg\n\nThe absence of a screen is a deliberate design choice, not an omission. Every interaction with the device would route through voice and ChatGPT's language model — no image display, no visual prompting interface, no touch input. For AI-art creators specifically, that's a meaningful constraint: this is not a device for reviewing generated images or browsing a model catalog. Its role would be more ambient — issuing generation prompts hands-free, managing creative queues, or brainstorming concepts aloud while working in another app.\n\n## What $300–$400 actually buys\n\nTechCrunch notes that the $300–$400 price range puts the device in a category of its own. Amazon's Echo line tops out around $230 for the Echo Show 15; Apple's HomePod sits at $299 but includes a seven-inch display. OpenAI's speaker would cost as much or more than a HomePod while offering less visual functionality — a bet that the quality of the AI brain inside justifies the premium over hardware features.\n\nThat pricing signals OpenAI is targeting the same early-adopter, professional-creative demographic that buys high-end drawing tablets or studio monitors: people who will pay for a best-in-class AI voice interface and don't need the screen because they're already working on one. Whether ChatGPT's conversational quality can carry that argument on its own is the real product question.\n\n## Jony Ive's design fingerprints\n\nIve's involvement is the other half of the story. His track record at Apple — the iMac G4, the iPhone, the AirPods case — consistently favored sculptural minimalism over feature maximalism. A doughnut-shaped, hockey-puck device with no screen fits that pattern exactly. The design reportedly has a "unique look," per Gurman, though no images have surfaced. Ive's studio, LoveFrom, has been working with OpenAI since at least 2024, and this device appears to be the first public output of that partnership.\n\nFor creators who care about the objects on their desks — and many do — a Jony Ive-designed AI peripheral carries a different kind of appeal than a generic smart speaker. Whether that aesthetic premium holds up against the raw utility question of "what can I actually do with this?" is something 2027 will answer.\n\nIn the meantime, anyone building AI-assisted creative workflows through voice can experiment with ChatGPT's existing voice mode, which already supports the kind of prompt iteration and concept brainstorming this device would presumably handle. The hardware is new; the underlying capability is already accessible — including through tools you can explore in the Charmloop guides for integrating AI assistants into image-generation workflows.
